Tuatahi First Fibre is proud to be a Toitū Envirocare Carbonreduce certified organisation, setting the foundation for continued work in sustainability.

This certification is awarded to companies actively working to measure and manage their carbon footprint. To achieve Toitū Carbonreduce certification, an organisation must measure all operational greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with international reporting standard ISO14064-1.

The journey to certification started in September 2021, driven by an understanding of Tuatahi’s environmental responsibilities and a commitment to make a meaningful difference.

“This is not just a certification; it’s a tangible output of our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to a healthier planet,” says Sustainability Lead Zac Parton.

“We acknowledge the role we play in ensuring a sustainable future for the communities we operate in.”

The audit conducted by Toitū Envirocare was a crucial step in this journey. It served as a comprehensive review of Tuatahi’s emissions data, management practices, and reduction strategies.

“We were confident that our efforts would meet the stringent standards set by Toitū. The auditors’ positive conclusion was a moment of validation for us, confirming our carbon emissions reporting is robust and aligned to international best practice.”

“We have worked hard to ensure our emissions tracking is accurate and reflects reality, and we have invested significant thought and effort into both our Emission Reduction Plan and our overarching Sustainability Plan.”

The Toitū Envirocare certification programme looks at six categories of emissions including operational activities, purchased energy, and impacts from some value chain activities. These areas correspond to Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, offering a framework for identifying both direct and indirect emissions.

Tuatahi is undertaking a series of initiatives aimed at reducing emissions and has set some ambitious targets for the years to come. They are working towards a 75% reduction for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, and achieving net zero emissions by 2040. For Scope 3 emissions, the objective is a 25% reduction by 2030, with the ultimate goal of net zero by 2050.

“Getting to this point has been challenging but incredibly rewarding, offering us valuable insights into sustainable practices and the tangible benefits they bring. It provides a baseline from which we can measure the impact and effectiveness of any initiatives we implement moving forward.”

“We understand that achieving certification is just the beginning of our sustainability journey. It's a milestone that marks our progress but also reminds us of the continuous effort required to maintain and improve our environmental performance.”
