Outage in Bay of Plenty fibre network – We’re working fast to get you back on line

Tuatahi First Fibre completes acquisition of Unison Fibre Limited

This marks a significant expansion of Tuatahi’s operations into the key areas of Hawke’s Bay, Taupō and Rotorua.

Following the initial sale and purchase agreement in October 2023, the acquisition was finalised on January 31.

Unison Fibre, previously a subsidiary of the Unison Group and wholly owned by the Hawke’s Bay Power Consumers’ Trust, has been pivotal in supporting Unison’s electricity network since its inception in 2009. Over the years, it has established a robust network with over 700km of fibre optic cable connecting over 3,500 customers.

Tuatahi CEO John Hanna expressed enthusiasm for the future, emphasising ongoing investment in the renowned thermal regions of Taupō and Rotorua, along with the thriving and resilient Hawke’s Bay.

“This acquisition aligns perfectly with our dedication to heartland New Zealand. We are committed to ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining a high standard of service and reliability for Unison Fibre’s current customers.”

Unison Group CEO Jaun Park is similarly enthusiastic about the acquisition.

“We’re very proud of the business Unison Fibre has grown to be and couldn’t be more pleased to be handing stewardship over to Tuatahi, who share the same values and commitment to excellence as Unison.”

The acquisition includes a well-planned, gradual transition of people, technology and systems. During this phase, customers may notice a combination of Unison Fibre and Tuatahi branding on various assets, including vehicles and fibre cabinets.

As part of the acquisition, Tuatahi is welcoming 12 Unison Fibre staff members to their team.

“Retaining local fibre expertise is crucial for us. We are thrilled to have the highly skilled, experienced team from Unison Fibre join us, ensuring continuity and exceptional service for our customers,” says Mr Hanna.

Under the ownership of Tuatahi, customers currently connected to the Unison Fibre network will ultimately have greater choice and access to up to 50 retail service providers, from big name national retailers to regional players and to specialised providers such as those preferred by gamers.

“We know our Unison Fibre team and customers will be in great hands with Tuatahi, and both will benefit from Tuatahi’s expertise and scale”, says Mr Park.

“Critically, communities will benefit too. We’re excited to see what the future holds for Unison Fibre’s team, customers and regions with Tuatahi at the helm.”
