Tuatahi First Fibre welcomes new guidelines supporting private sector-led infrastructure innovation
Tuatahi First Fibre welcomes the release of the Government’s updated guidelines for market-led proposals (MLPs).
Tuatahi Chief Executive John Hanna says these guidelines are a significant step forward in encouraging private sector innovation and investment in infrastructure projects that deliver both public value and sustainable returns for investors.
“We see this as a way to support the work we have been doing with the Government in recent years to maximise the reach of our fibre network and broadband technologies, which is now far greater than what was envisaged at the start of the Government’s Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB) rollout.”
Mr Hanna says stripping back regulation, investing in local providers, and trusting the ingenuity of our people will result in a faster-growing industry that will improve connections, especially for our rural communities.
“Tuatahi is committed to increasing connectivity for New Zealanders, particularly in rural areas. However, there is little incentive for investment when the cost of rural connectivity has such low returns.”
“The streamlined process and emphasis on transparency will allow us to bring forward innovative fibre network proposals that build stronger, more connected communities while supporting the digital economy.”
Mr Hanna also highlighted the benefits of the MLP guidelines for private investors.
“As a fibre network operator, we see this as an opportunity to propose new projects that extend the reach of ultra-fast broadband as well as continuing to invest in fibre networks. As we ensure that no community is left behind, these guidelines provide the transparency and governance needed to make the right investments at pace.”
The updated MLP guidelines focus on early engagement and a simplified four-stage process, making it easier for operators to demonstrate the unique benefits of their proposals. For fibre networks, this means faster progress on critical telecommunications projects that deliver measurable benefits to communities.
Tuatahi is looking forward to continuing its work with the Government and other stakeholders to deliver innovative fibre broadband solutions that meet the growing connectivity needs of New Zealand.
