Kereone Rugby and Sports Club welcomed five Gallagher Chiefs players yesterday, after winning a special visit through a Tuatahi First Fibre social media competition.
Chiefs players Leroy Carter, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, Jahrome Brown, Aisake Vakasiuola and Emoni Narawa spent time with the club’s junior players, running skills-based activities, signing autographs and posing for photos.
The competition, run as part of Tuatahi’s sponsorship of the Chiefs, gave junior rugby clubs the chance to win a visit from the team and 100 tickets to the Chiefs vs. Highlanders game at FMG Stadium on 15 May.
Children took part in a series of interactive stations, including an obstacle agility circuit, a reaction-speed challenge, a 3v2 attack zone and a precision passing challenge. The activities focused on movement, teamwork, confidence and decision-making, with the Chiefs players demonstrating skills, offering tips and encouraging players throughout the session.
Inge Witte, Kereone Rugby and Sports Club Development Officer, said winning the experience had meant so much to the club and wider community.
“Our junior rugby numbers have grown over the last few years, and seeing more kids getting involved each season is just awesome. To have the Chiefs players come out to our club and spend time with our junior players was pretty special. These opportunities don’t just happen, and these are memories the kids will never forget,” said Ms Witte.
“The kids were absolutely buzzing getting to meet some of the Chiefs players, ask questions, grab photos and autographs, and be part of something so exciting. For many of them, these are the players they look up to every week on TV, so getting to meet them in person at their own club was unreal.”
Ms Witte said moments like this were hugely important for grassroots rugby clubs.
“Community rugby is built on volunteers, families and local support, and experiences like this help inspire the next generation to stay involved in the game and strengthen club spirit.”
Tuatahi Acting Chief Executive Richard Riley said the visit reflected Tuatahi’s commitment to supporting the communities it serves.
“Tuatahi First Fibre is all about connecting people and communities, so we’re proud to help bring opportunities like this to grassroots clubs,” said Mr Riley.
“It’s fantastic to see kids out on the field, learning new skills, having fun and spending time alongside some of New Zealand’s top rugby talent.”
The visit finished with a group photo, certificates and spot prizes, with the Chiefs players recognising children who showed standout effort, teamwork and attitude.
